White screen of death

Been experiencing "white screen of death" on my Acer. I have tested external display, its working and system is intact. I found that this is common among Acer laptops, due to defective connectors or defective LCD inverters. I did check on the back plate, re-installed the video card, memory and all. But to no avail, still just the blank white screen on the LCD.

IRON WILL

The Project to raise funds for BigD's (William de Goroztiza) Treatment. Organized by friends of William. Texts below are from an email I received.
We are currently helping William and his family raise funds for his treatment.

IRON WILL  is the umbrella project that we’ve started to help raise the money that Will needs to get well.  To kick the project off, we’ll be having Wednesday parties at Fuel starting tomorrow, 13 January.  Entrance fee with 1 free drink is only Php 200.  You are free to give more as you wish.  Part of the proceeds will go to William’s treatment.

We will also be holding garage sales, concerts and other activities in the next coming weeks to raise as much money we can to help.   Please watch out for email blasts on our upcoming activities to help raise funds.

Wine regedit tweak

Here is a wine registry tweak to boost FPS ( Framerate) when using World of Warcraft thru wine.

Type in "regedit" in the terminal console.

Then,

1. Find this key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine"
2. Highlight and select "wine" right click it, then select [NEW] then [KEY]
3. Rename the new [KEY] to "OpenGL" (this is case sensitive )
4. Select the new OpenGL [KEY] on the right pane, then right-click then create new string and name it "DisabledExtensions" (once again case sensitive) then modify the value name it, "GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object"

Should look like this.

Linux Mint 8 "Helena"

Helena has been released Nov. 28, 2009. And I am quite tempted to try it, this will be the first time I'm going to test Linux Mint. It is based on Ubuntu, so far the easiest linux distro I've tried and tested.

Based on GNU/Debian Linux, what I like about this type of distro is the easiest way to get what you need, in terms of software, or plugins, a mirror based on my country that makes downloading lightning fast.

Wine

Wine is not an Emulator, I am installing wine after having the rendering to work. That is odd by the way, I didn't even realize it is working in the first place. I didn't consider and forgot, i haven't restarted X. Silly me.

Nvidia Propietary Drivers

Successfully installed Fedora 12 and its propietary drivers using RPMFusion. Encountered a problem, when i run glxgears, glxinfo.

Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

Right now I am installing gcc, planing to install it manually using the NVIDIA Installers.

Migration

I have migrated to linux away from windows OS. Thru the years i have been, running linux since the early days way back 1996. At the time Mandriva and Red Hat was the distro of choice for me. I remember downloading using a 56kbps dial up modem. Last 2005 I was running OpenSuSE, and barely tried Fedora. However, i have not migrated until recently. I am running Ubuntu right now, started it under 8.10, also tested kubuntu. About a few months ago. I am satisfied with it, with the help of the community and a nearby server for the repositories. Its quite comparable to having a backup of your applications and softwares on a separate drive. I don't usually post to message boards to ask for help. For the reasons, there are lots of people having the same problem as me and have been discussed and Solved. Why would I waste time asking other people when you can find the answers yourself.

I came across last night regarding the benchmark of Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 into several tests, including a NPB, NASA Parallel Benchmark(NASA Advanced Supercomputing) between the two distros. Check it here. I am quite impressed with Fedora.

So I have downloaded a copy of the Live CD from Distrowatch for Fedora and tried it. I will change my main system to Fedora and review it further for a few more months.

What I miss is the Login Window Preferences (gdmsetup, gdm themes) that vanishes due to the accomodation of the boot-time speed Ubuntu is best heard of. They replaced it with xsplash.

I prefer to customize my login, so I was finding another distro that have it still in the package. Fedora 12 has also removed it on their latest distro.

But still, I am looking forward to switch to Fedora, It was Fedora 4 when i first used it.

For now, I am waiting to purchase a USB enclosure for my 160GB Hard Drive to backup my things. To fully migrate to open-source.

I still have a backup partition in my system that is running NTFS. I am planning to completely go for 100% EXT4 partition. Rendering my System to 100% linux from 90% linux.

Leiomyosarcoma

It is sad news to hear from a friend and a fellow rider, William de Gorostiza aka BigDaddyCool (NOS). That he have undergone a cancer treatment, firstly identified as a cancer in the Urinary Bladder. After the operation it was later found out it was Leiomyosarcoma. He said, provided that there will be no re-occurence he will be fine and undergo several chemo-therapy sessions.

I feel sad that a friend is fighting for life, facing an inevitable opponent and a miracle as a weapon. He have quit smoking for about a year.

I remember the days, I rode with him during NOS's first visit to Palaisdaan ride or was it the First circum-navigation of Laguna lake. visit to Caliraya Lake 2. During that time, we are both facing the urge and hardship of trying to quit smoking. I am still smoking to date, I hope I can find the strength to quit before it is too late.

I told him, maybe this is just a wake up call, that God is here to challenge his faith. God is kind, He has reasons for this. Please everyone, give 5-10 seconds of your time. Pray for his recovery.

Once a NOS always a NOS. You have NOS that will pray for your recovery BigD.
