How to use Globe Tattoo on Ubuntu 10.04

Yuki with my Openline Globe Tattoo
It's handy to have a plug-it internet or USB HSDPA Modem that you can use when on mobile and or when your main internet connection is down.

Here's how, first in order for your system to read your modem as a modem and not as a storage media, you need usb-modswitch installed.

You can do that by typing at the terminal.

"sudo apt-get install usb-modswitch"

Next step is plug your modem in. Then wait for a few seconds until the system recognize your modem. You can check it by typing "lsusb"  check if your modem is recognized and has vendor ID 1001, if it says 1446 it means it is read as a mass storage device.

If it is correctly configured, next step is configuring your apn settings, head over your network manager on your tool bar or systray. open the configuration tool and select the Mobile Broadband tab, click add. It will look like this.

Follow thru the wizard as shown on the image on the left. Notice the device as Huwaei, it will differ if you use other brands.
Next is, selecting a carrier, after selecting the country you will be on this spot where you will select a carrier, choices include globe, sun and smart.

Right now I am using globe so I selected globe.

In this part of the wizard, you will select a plan. For every carrier there is different plan, some will be post-paid, others are pre-paid. And access points differs from plan to plan.

In my case I select my plan is not on the list, and provide my own access point.

"http.globe.com.ph"

After the wizard closes, you will be on this spot of the network configuration.

The access number is filled in, some uses *99***1# on a windows system, globe tattoo uses this number, In linux, it's just *99# it never worked for me copying the apn settings on a windows system.

On the username and password field, key in "globe" on both fields.

The thing is sometimes with unexplained scenarios it differs from system to system, in my case this worked.

Some system will opt you to uncheck other authentication methods and leave "CHAP" checked, but in my case I have it all checked as shown on the last photo. So it doesn't matter.

Now you are all set. Click network manager and you will see the configuration title you named or if you didn't changed it, you will see globe telecom, etc.

Click it to connect to the internet.Happy surfing.
About apn settings you may refer to this article by clicking here. There are some variations on some, you can always google if this doesn't help you.

I suffered through this issue without a guide trying to get it to work on my wife's laptop when she was running Ubuntu. Ubuntu is nice, and it seems like they're coming out with new and better applications for it all the time, but it didn't work too well with my wife's laptop. It kept the fanning running full speed all the time, so we went ahead and got it hooked up with Windows 7, which is actually nice.

Anyhow, I see you changed up your header a bit. Looks good.
